What the picnic covers
Inclusions vary by operator — this is a route run by dozens of Santiago agencies, not one company. On the tour we link to, a picnic is included at a stop in the canyon after the reservoir, but breakfast and lunch are not, and the picnic's contents aren't published. It's set out in the open rather than at a restaurant, which is the trade-off the whole day is built around: less time at a table, more time with the view, and a picnic blanket instead of a chair.
Dietary needs are a booking-time question
Nobody's improvising a special diet out of a shared picnic hamper in the canyon. Layers, not just a jacket
The temperature swing across the day is the single most underestimated part of this trip — a mild Santiago morning, a genuinely cold and windy reservoir, and a warmer afternoon back at lower altitude on the way down. A base layer, something warmer such as a fleece, and a windproof outer shell beats one heavy coat that's either too much or not enough depending on where you actually are on the route at the time.
Sun protection matters more than it looks like it should
UV exposure increases with altitude, and the effect is easy to underestimate on a day that also involves a lot of wind and cool air — sunburn at 2,500 metres doesn't feel like it's happening the way it would on a beach, since the wind keeps skin from feeling as hot as it actually is. Sunglasses, sunscreen reapplied through the day and a hat are worth packing even if the morning starts grey and overcast down in Santiago.
Cash, phone signal and the basics
Bring Chilean pesos for any extras along the route — entrance fees and roadside stops are more reliably handled in cash than by card this far from the city, and small-denomination notes are more useful than large ones at a kiosk with limited change. Phone signal thins out past San Jose de Maipo, so download anything you need — offline maps, music, translation apps — before the van leaves the last town with reliable coverage, rather than counting on data working at the reservoir.
If the picnic isn't enough
For a day this long, a single picnic may not be quite enough food for everyone, particularly given the cold and the physical effort of walking on loose gravel at the reservoir. Packing a few of your own snacks — nuts, dried fruit, a chocolate bar — costs nothing to plan for and covers the gap between what's provided and what a genuinely long day at altitude tends to burn through.
Toilets and facilities along the route
Facilities are basic once the van leaves San Jose de Maipo — expect simple stops rather than anything resembling a service station, and treat the town itself as the last reliable option before the gravel climb begins in earnest. Most operators build a stop into the itinerary for exactly this reason, usually timed around the transition from paved road to gravel; if yours doesn't clearly mention one, it's a reasonable question to ask before the day starts rather than discovering the gap partway up the canyon with no easy place to turn back to.
